Fire Cider is a tonic with deep roots in folk medicine that was brought to popularity by the American herbalist and author, Rosemary Gladstar. Fire Cider uses vinegar as its base, instead of most herbal tinctures, which use alcohol. It really sends home the message, let food be thy medicine. To make fire cider, we add warming, immune and circulatory enhancing, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral foods, and herbs to a vinegar base and with time the medicinal properties are extracted into the vinegar. This spicy yet sweet tonic warms both body and soul.
Fire cider has been consumed traditionally to ward off sore throats, colds, flu, chest congestion, and to promote circulation; which warms us up in the cold months to come. Since it takes about 4-6 weeks for this extraction to happen, this is the perfect time to prepare your herbal medicine for when the cold nights fall upon us!
In this Bring Your Own Knife and Cutting Board class, you will be provided with everything else to make a Quart of your own fire cider, to be taken home, to be loved, and eventually strained to be enjoyed.
You will learn about the medicinal qualities of the plants within the formula, a history of fire cider, basic herbal extraction lesson, the importance of traditional foods and remedies, recipes and ideas how to incorporate this tonic in your home, and directions how to strain your fire cider and sweeten at home after its rest. You will also be provided with tastings of fire cider.
The fun about making this beautiful tonic is that you can become really creative with it. You will be provided with a base of peppers, onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric, horseradish, thyme, rosemary, lemon, orange and apple cider vinegar (all organic and/or local). Please feel free to bring other herbs and foods from your garden or market! Some suggestions would be cinnamon, astragalus, Echinacea, rosehips, elderberries, cumin, hibiscus, oregano, sage.
About the Instructor:
This class is taught by local Integrative Nutritionist, Alyssa Regan. She holds a master’s degree in Nutrition and Integrative health from Maryland University of Integrative Health, with studies in herbalism. She has a love for local farms and sustainable, organic agriculture. Alyssa enjoys cooking nourishing meals and experimenting with her own herbal preparations in her home in Kennett Square. She has a deep passion for Women’s Health and helping to grow the relationships we hold with our food and Mother Earth.
**Pre-Registration is required and closes Sunday, September 30th end of day!**
This class will be held outside on the Temenos grounds. There is a pavilion for shade or in case it rains. Please dress according to the weather.
All produce and materials will be provided, except for a cutting board and knife. Please be sure to bring your own!
