Class Description:

We are entering the winter season. A time to turn inward, a time for extra nourishment and a time for reflection. A warm, rich, gelatinous bone broth is always a nice companion during this time. Whether sipping in a mug, blended in a soup, or used in a tonic, broth will certainly warm your soul.

There’s an old South American proverb that states “Good broth will resurrect the dead.”, if you’ve been lucky enough to make or enjoy a good broth, you may indeed share this sentiment.

Bone broth is a wonderful way to add some gelatin into your diet. Gelatin is a very good source of amino acids. It also nourishes your hair, skin, nails, joints, and muscles, soothes and heals the digestive tract, reduces inflammation, builds immunity and enhances the absorption of nutrients. Bone broth provides your body with readily available vitamins and minerals that are easy to digest and assimilate.

Adding specific herbs and spices to your broth can enhance its immune healing properties.

During this class, you will learn how to incorporate more broth into your diet. You will learn how to search for good quality bones and meat (a critical part of broth making). Alyssa will demonstrate how to break down a whole chicken and use all the parts in a broth. You will get to sample a cup of chicken bone broth as well as an herbal elixir containing broth. We will discuss how to cook broth the traditional way, long-cooked on a stove top or fire, as well as a more modern approach using a Slow Cooker or Instant Pot. You will leave with recipes and new ideas to begin to incorporate this nourishing food in your daily life. You will also learn storage techniques and how to freeze your broth.

Most importantly, you will learn ways to add medicinal mushrooms and healing herbs to your broth to bring its nutritional and immune properties to the next level.

About the Instructor:

This class is taught by local Integrative Nutritionist, Alyssa Regan. She holds a master’s degree in Nutrition and Integrative health from Maryland University of Integrative Health, with studies in herbalism. She has a love for local farms and sustainable, organic agriculture. Alyssa enjoys cooking nourishing meals and experimenting with her own herbal preparations in her home in Kennett Square. She has a deep passion for Women’s Health and helping to grow the relationships we hold with our food and Mother Earth.
